THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS

In assisting clients to find solutions, counselling Sydney and About counselling solutions draws upon a variety of therapeutic interventions, ranging from short-term solution-focused brief therapy to evidenced based cognitive behavioural therapy. His focus in treatment is generally client-centred, working within the scope of what the client’s needs may be, while monitoring the effects of such treatment. His method of counselling derives from a holistic approach, working mainly from a Family Systems model.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused therapeutic approach, which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Elements of the desired solution often are already present in the client's life, and become the basis for ongoing change. The ability to articulate what the changes will be like is often more important than understanding what led to the problem.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based practice approach that has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms in a wide variety of psychological disorders including depression, generalised anxiety, panic disorder, eating disorders and other conditions.

CBT is time-limited, usually involving 4 to 16 sessions depending upon your circumstances. It is goal oriented and problem focused, and uses a variety of techniques to help the individual change their thinking, mood and behaviour. Many individuals show significant improvement within 6 to 10 sessions.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy CBT comprises both cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. Cognitive therapy involves identifying and systematically evaluating the unhelpful thoughts (or cognitions) that lead to intense or frequent negative feelings (e.g. depression, anxiety) and result in unhelpful behaviours (e.g. avoiding social situations). The treatment focuses on questioning thoughts and coming up with new, more helpful ways to think about difficult situations.
